Google Ads for Shopify: Search, Shopping, or Performance Max?
Short version: for most Shopify stores, Shopping and Performance Max drive the volume because they show your product with an image and a price. Branded Search protects your own name cheaply. Non-brand Search is for high-intent queries. And your product feed matters more than your bids.
The three campaign types, plainly
- Shopping — image, price, and store name in the results. The workhorse for product-led demand, and the most transparent to manage.
- Performance Max — Google's automated campaign spanning Shopping, Search, YouTube, Display, and more. Powerful reach, but a "black box" you have to steer carefully.
- Search — text ads on queries. Split into branded (people searching your name) and non-brand (people searching the category).
Start with the feed, not the bids
Shopping and PMax are only as good as your product feed. Titles, descriptions, product types, images, and GTINs decide which searches you show up for. A clean, well-structured feed routinely outperforms clever bidding on a messy one. This is the highest-leverage work and the part most stores neglect.
Protect your brand cheaply
Branded search — bidding on your own name — is usually cheap and high-converting, and it stops competitors from sitting above you when someone's already looking for you. It's rarely where growth comes from, but it's near-mandatory hygiene.
Performance Max, with eyes open
PMax can scale well, but it will happily eat your branded traffic and report it as new performance if you let it. Feed it good assets, exclude your brand terms where appropriate, and watch that it's driving incremental sales — not just claiming credit for demand you already had.
Measure on profit, not just ROAS
A high ROAS on branded search flatters the account; it doesn't mean you're growing. Judge campaigns on incremental, profitable revenue after product cost and fees — and on blended CAC across all channels — not on a single platform's last-click number.
